Woodford County Farm Bureau. An Advocate for Agriculture and the Improvement of Rural Life since 1915.
On December 18, 1914 a group of men met in the Circuit Court Room of the Courthouse to consider the forming of a Farm Bureau and hiring an Agriculture Agent in Woodford County. Representatives from each township were chosen as representation. The Township representatives were sent back to their areas of the county to learn of interest and to report back at a meeting that was held December 29, 1914.
At the meeting on December 29 there were 102 people from across 6 townships that had expressed interest in forming a Farm Bureau. Pledge cards were distributed by township and once 100 pledge cards were signed, another meeting would be called.
On January 22, 1915 a meeting was called to order to permanently organize the Woodford County Farm Bureau. At this meeting the Constitution and By Laws were adopted. According to the Original Constitution, “the object of this association shall be to employ a County Agent and such assistants as may be necessary and to develop the most profitable and permanent system of agriculture possible in this county.”
Over time that County Agent would become the Ag Educator with the Extension Service. Through Farm Bureau also came the creation of what we know of today as the GROWMARK/FS System, Prairie Farms Dairy and COUNTRY Financial. All of these pieces work together to fulfill the purpose created by the group of men that gathered back in late 1914.
Today Farm Bureau thrives by providing our members with the Legislative Information and Educational Programs to assist them in their farming operation. Members also make educational presentations in our classrooms on food production and safety. The grassroots efforts of our members, speaking out for their industry, gives our organization strength.
All these pieces work together to help fulfill the mission of the Woodford County Farm Bureau: To be an Advocate for Agriculture and for the Improvement of Rural Life.
